White Winged CrossbillPosted by Bill Ault (GBA, Canada) on 5 January 2009 in Animal & Insect and Portfolio. A New Year's Day surprise - a small flock of white-winged crossbills took over the spruce tree right next to the house and proceeded to feast on the cones... This was the first time I had ever seen them in our area and my father says he's never seen them here either... For more you can listen to them here or learn even more here.

@Eleftheria!: Thanks Eleftheria. Knut Magne from Hamar, NorwayBeautiful picture of a beautiful bird. We have something similar here in Norway, but maybe not exactly the same species. 5 Jan 2009 9:06pm @Knut Magne: Species is quite common around the world I think but we don't see them often even here. Observing from West Cheshire, United KingdomWonderful image, the little bird has quite a sharp beak..? 6 Jan 2009 1:26am @Observing: Very sharp - it is said they can dice an apple in seconds to get to the seeds - watching them dissect the cones on the spruce tree was quite entertaining - they were incredibly quick doing it as well. @Earnest: Thanks Earnest |
